I believe that when a student is involved, he/she truly learns. This is part of my methodology of teaching foreign languages. I’ve been teaching for more than 20 years and making the student involved is a key to teaching with success. Not only does the student get motivated, but you, as an instructor, look for different ways to make the most of the learning process.
I motivate students starting with the first minute and work to keep them involved in every single class. I am a firm believer in active learning. When I started teaching English as a Second Language I encouraged the students participate all the time, as opposed to just listening to me.
Some of the strategies I use in every Skype class include, but are not limited to, brief question and answer sessions, I also create discussions integrated into the topics we are dealing with, create hands-on activities and experiential learning events. I try to think of learning a foreign language as integrating active learning strategies and setting clear expectations. In the course of all learning activities, I provide corrections and also helpful feedback. I like giving feedback in the middle but also at the end of the activity.
To make it simple, in my experience, hands-on, actively involved students learn any subject most effectively.
